On Friday, January 4, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued two new proposed rules:
- Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food (explained in 680 pages of the Federal Register)and
- Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption (explained in 547 pages of the Federal Register).
The Food and Beverage Industry need to pay close attention to FDA’s proposed rules. FDA’s proposed rule for preventive controls will affect many companies that manufacture, process, pack or hold human food. This includes both U.S. and non-U.S. food facilities. The rule mandates each food facility have written food safety plans to “identify potential hazards, put in place steps to address them, verify that the steps are working, and outline how to correct any problems that arise.” This is just one of the many requirements proposed by the new rules.
FDA is taking comments on the proposed rules. Comments are due to FDA by February 15th. FDA’s proposed rules will not be finalized for several months and will not take effect until a year after they are finalized. Over the next few weeks, Registrar Corp’s Regulatory Specialists will be reviewing the documents in an effort to report how the changes may affect industry.
